EDMONTON- A 32-year-old Gibbons man is dead after his motorcycle collided with a light standard Saturday night.

Around 10:45 p.m., police saw a motorcycle “driving erratically” in the area of Groat Road and 114th Avenue, said Acting Sergeant Steve Levesque, with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS).

Levesque says officers activated their emergency lights and the motorcycle took off “at a high rate of speed.”

“The officers immediately turned off their lights and did not pursue the motorcycle,” Levesque added.

A short time later, police were called to a motorcycle crash in the area of 114th Avenue and 139th Street.

Levesque says the 32-year-old driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

“This is the extreme end of the tragic consequences that can result from motorcycles or, for that matter, any motorists fleeing from police,” Levesque said. “My advice would be if the police are trying to stop you, nothing is going to be worse than running and getting in a collision where you are killed. So obviously if police are trying to stop you pull over and stop.”

EPS has confirmed the black Yamaha motorcycle involved in the crash had been reported stolen on Tuesday, May 7.

Officers say speed was a factor in the collision, while road and weather conditions were not. At this time it is not known if alcohol of drugs were involved.

The victim’s name has not been released.
