John Furlong’s wife dies in a car crash in Ireland

The wife of the former CEO of VANOC, John Furlong, has died in a car crash in Ireland.

Deborah Sharp Furlong, 48, was vacationing there and was driving alone on Thursday when she was involved in the crash.

John Furlong released a statement on Friday morning saying:

It is with a broken heart that I must tell you of the death of my beloved wife Deborah Sharp Furlong as a result of an automobile accident while driving alone while on vacation in the southeast of Ireland on April 11, 2013.

While our extended families are beyond words over this loss, we would like to thank our friends and well-wishers for their heartfelt concern and condolences as our families face this sudden and painful tragedy.

While I understand that there may be interest in more details, please understand that at this extremely difficult time, I request privacy for our families. Thank you.

According to RTE News / Ireland, Deborah Sharp Furlong was driving along a wide stretch of road at Coolishall Upper, outside Gorey town, when she collided with a 4×4 on the R772 between Gorey and Clough at about 10:30 a.m.

She was taken by air ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the second vehicle broke a bone in his foot and was treated for shock and trauma.

Gardai in Gorey have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Police say she is the 55th person to die on Irish roads this year.

Furlong was involved with the show Arctic Air. She also was a production manager on a few shows such as The Guard and Cold Squad.
