William Whiteside gets 16 years in prison for killing of Surrey clerk Alok Gupta

William Whiteside, 23, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the Christmas Day killing of Alok Gupta.

Whiteside will get 11 months credit for time served, so he will serve just over 15 years.

Whiteside pleaded guilty to manslaughter for killing Gupta on Christmas Day 2011.

Gupta was a 29-year-old immigrant from India, where he was studying business at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. He was shot and killed during a robbery on a day he was not even supposed to be working.

He was not scheduled to work that day, but agreed to work an evening shift as a favour to the owner so he could spend the holiday with his family.
