WATCH: Bob Rae gives farewell speech as interim Liberal leader

TORONTO – Bob Rae has taken his final bow as interim Liberal leader.

Liberals paid tribute to Rae at an event in the Toronto-area today that will feature speeches from the candidates vying to take over the party’s helm.

But as he makes way for a permanent new leader to be chosen April 14, Rae is warning Liberals they must remain united if they hope to restore the party to its former glory.

Rae has held down the Liberal fort since the May 2011 federal election.

Former prime minister Paul Martin says Rae will be remembered not as an interim leader but as “one of the great leaders of the Liberal party.”

Under Rae’s stewardship, Liberals have managed to fight their way back into contention in national opinion polls, overtaking the NDP and now running tied or even slightly ahead of the Conservatives.
