Vanscoy police prepare for upcoming flood season via twitter

SASKATOON – In the RM of Vanscoy, residents are keeping a watch on snow melt and police plan to use social media as a tool to alert people.

The snow banks are built up so high it’s almost like driving through a half pipe in the Vanscoy area southwest of Saskatoon.

With a hectic snowfall this season, residents are worried about a fast melt this spring.

Tech-savvy Staff Sgt. Glenn Thomson is already prepared for the flooding season.

Last week, he was busy tweeting when a winter storm hit the Prairies and is set to start up again if or when flooding occurs.

“I think it’s going to be very important because we can get it out very quickly. If I find a road that’s closed or the RM crews find a road that’s closed they’ll pass it on to me… We’ll get that stuff out right away,” said Thomson.

RCMP are encouraging people making 911 calls in the RM to make sure they know a dry route first responders can safely take during emergencies.

This extra time could make the difference in saving a life.
