Prime Minister Justine Trudeau said the current tax system is not fair and proposed changes will help support Canada’s middle class.
But one woman at the UBC Okanagan town hall meeting Trudeau attended Wednesday night said changing the tax system will force her, a new physician, to choose between her career and having a family.
The self-employed in Canada do not qualify for maternity or paternity benefits.
Proposed changes would increase tax rates for those in income brackets that include most doctors, who are generally self-employed when then have their own practice.
Trudeau defended some of the Liberal’s platforms and proposals to 2,300 attended.
The group, no matter if they agreed with Trudeau or not, went easy on the PM.
Trudeau was in Kelowna for nearly four days around caucus meetings being held in the Okanagan.
He left the region Thursday afternoon.
