London Lightning players ready to move forward after charges dropped, suspensions lifted

The London Lightning basketball team is ready to move forward as two players come off a three-month suspension.

Marcus Capers and Taylor Black were charged with assaulting a police officer in December. Black also faced an additional charge of resisting arrest.

Police say they were called to Joe Kool’s Restaurant around 1:45 a.m. December 13, 2016 for a report of a male refusing to leave the establishment. Police said Black and Capers were taken into custody after a female officer at the scene was allegedly assaulted and suffered a minor injury.

On Tuesday, the team announced that the charges were dropped after the pair completed an accountability program over the weekend.

“I did community service at a soup kitchen, which I actually enjoyed. I had to do 25 hours and I did 30,” Capers told AM980.

“You really appreciate life more when you see certain people, you hear different stories from people who deal with real life issues. You feel like you’re stressed out, you’re just having a bad day and then you see people… They’d be outside, it was snowing one day, one of the dudes, he had no shoes. He was outside, like ‘I’m fine, I’m OK’. He could shake that off.”

Capers said his only frustration was over the way the news came out and that people didn’t hear his side of the story.

“[I received] Twitter messages, Facebook messages, IG messages, how disappointed people was when they don’t really know the true story. That’s the only thing I was really mad about. I understood, we got in trouble. Once you get in trouble, you got to face the consequences.”

The Lightning have activated Capers and he will play in Thursday’s game at home against the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans.

“We’re happy this situation has been resolved so that Marcus and Taylor can move forward with their lives,” said owner-GM Vito Frijia.

Black, however, suffered a concussion in the incident and will not be returning to the team.
