Ten million pledged to STARS from Sask. Crowns

SASKATOON – Saskatchewan’s Crown Investment Corporations announced a $10 million contribution towards the province’s Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) helicopter operations over a five year period.

Contributions around two million dollars will come from SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskTel and SGI.

“The government as a whole has committed to support STARS and the Crowns have crews working in rural and remote areas across the province, sometimes in hazardous conditions. We all have a stake in public safety and emergency response,” said Crown Investments Corporation Minister Donna Harpauer.

STARS began service out of Regina in the spring and Saskatoon soon followed in the fall. So far, they have flown more than 140 missions.

The non-profit STARS organization began over 27-years-ago and has flown more than 22,000 missions out of bases in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Funding for operations is met through charitable donations to the STARS Foundation.

“We’re still a young organization in this province and this will allow us to be there when we’re needed as we continue to build our fundraising capacity,” said STARS Foundation Executive Director Rod Gantefoer.
