The East St. Paul Kerri Einarson rink won their first grand slam title on Sunday.

The defending women’s provincial champions knocked off the Swiss Silvana Tirinzoni foursome 5-3 in the women’s final of the National in Sault Ste. Marie.

Playing in their first grand slam final, team Einarson stole a single point in the fifth end to get control of the match. With the score tied at three in the seventh end, Einarson made a draw for a deuce and then they ran Tirinzoni out of rocks in the eighth end to secure the victory.

Einarson and her team of Selena Kaatz, Liz Fyfe and Kristin MacCuish reeled off six straight wins to capture the title. They had made it all the way to the semifinals the week before at the Canada Cup in Brandon only to lose to Rachel Homan.

In the men’s draw the red hot Reid Carruthers rink had their luck run out in the final.

After winning last weekend’s Canada Cup, Carruthers suffered a 4-2 loss to Brad Jacobs in Sunday’s championship game of the National grand slam.

Neither team scored more than a single point over the eight end contest. Carruthers had a shot for the win in the final end. With Jacobs lying three, Carruthers needed to make the takeout and slide onto the button. Carruthers removed Jacob’s stone successfully but his rock didn’t slide over far enough and Carruthers came up only inches short of a second straight victory. Jacobs, who is from Sault Ste. Marie, stole single points in each the sixth and eighth ends to earn the victory on home ice.

The loss ended a streak of nine straight wins for Carruthers and his teammates Braeden Moskowy, Derek Samagalski, and Colin Hodgson. It was their only loss all week after winning all four round robin games and both playoff games to get to the final.
