A Chicago city council member who recently lashed out at “aggressive squirrels” was seriously injured in a bicycle accident after a squirrel jumped in front of him and got mangled in the spokes of the bicycle’s front wheel.
Last month, alderman Howard Brookins told council the city is spending too much cash on replacing garbage bins because of “aggressive squirrels” chewing through them, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Now, it appears that one furry rodent was out for some revenge on the city councillor.
Brookins was out for a bike ride on Nov. 13 when a “suicide bomber” squirrel darted out in front of the cyclist and got stuck in the front spokes of the bike, sending Brookins over the front handlebars.
“I am sorry to report that I will be unable to attend any Ward or neighborhood events for the near future as I was seriously injured in a freak bicycle accident,” Brookins wrote on Facebook. “First, I am okay and I have been recovering in the hospital since the accident. I will, however, require multiple surgeries to recover from damage to my face and upper body.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, Brookins suffered a broken nose, a fractured skull and some of his teeth were knocked out as a result of the accident.
Brookins didn’t say on Facebook what led to the accident but he posted a photo showing his Specialized Bicycle lying on its side and a squirrel is seen lodged in the front spokes.
On Monday, the politician speculated to the Chicago Tribune what may have led to the crash.
“I can think of no other reason for this squirrel’s actions than that it was like a suicide bomber, getting revenge,” he told the newspaper. “Some lady came along the trail and found me lying there next to my bicycle and called 911. I only saw the squirrel when I came to and saw it stuck in the wheel.”
