The final span of Saskatoon’s Traffic Bridge is about to come down, but it won’t be going out with a bang.

Instead, heavy equipment will be used to dismantle the last remaining span.

Graham Commuter Partners, the contractor for the project, said crews will perform the tear-down starting Thursday morning using equipment staged on a containment berm.

The span will be lowered to the berm where it will be cut into smaller pieces before being removed.

The upper portions of the two piers then will be demolished and new concrete will be poured on top of the 1907 footings to build the new piers.

It will take an estimated two weeks to complete the work.

The new Traffic Bridge is part of the city’s Bridging to Tomorrow project, which includes the North Commuter Parkway and major road improvements.

Both bridges are expected to be ready for traffic in October 2018.
