House Speaker Paul Ryan pledged Tuesday that “better days lie ahead” for the United States of America under president-elect Donald Trump and a unified Republican Congress.

“Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government,” Ryan said at a morning press conference. “Feels really good to say that, actually.”

Though Ryan is supportive of Trump now that he’s won the election, the Republican leader’s support hasn’t always been enthusiastic. During the campaign, he told Republicans in Congress they could stop supporting Trump if it would bolster their chances in elections, according to the New York Times.

Ryan’s comments came as he tries to win over House Republicans to keep his job in the upcoming Congress.

Ryan said he’s talking frequently with Trump and top officials and is still formulating strategies to get the Trump administration off to a quick start on Capitol Hill. Ryan declined to reveal what the agenda of the ongoing lame-duck session will be.

“This will be a government focused on turning president-elect Trump’s victory into real progress for the American people. Our team is very excited and cannot wait to get to work,” Ryan said. “At the same time we recognize that the task ahead of us is enormous.”

Trump was meeting with vice president-elect Mike Pence in New York Tuesday to discuss key appointments to his Cabinet.

“In the days and weeks ahead, we will be working very closely with president-elect and his transition team to layout our ambitious path for 2017,” Ryan said. “That team of course is led by vice president-elect Mike Pence and it includes several of our own members, so we are working hand-in-glove from the start.

“We want to make sure that we hit the ground running in January so we can deliver on the new president’s agenda. A better way, better days lie ahead for our country,” Ryan said.
