The Winnipeg Jets once again looked down and out, but once again battled their way back into the hockey game, only to lose in overtime anyway.

The Jets settled for a single point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday. Alex Ovechkin’s second goal of the game at 3:21 of overtime sent the Capitals to their second straight win over the Jets after winning in Winnipeg just two nights ago. Ovechkin also had an assist for a three point night. T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom also scored goals for the Caps while Braden Holtby made 24 stops.

The inconsistent Jets came out flying and outshot the Capitals 11-4 in the opening period but trailed by a single goal. The Capitals responded in the second period and took the game over with a pair of goals to lead 3-0 heading into the final frame. But goals by Toby Enstrom, Adam Lowry and Marko Dano in the third stanza helped the Jets earn a single point.

Michael Hutchinson made 28 saves for the Jets. Dustin Byfuglien had a game high 31:07 of ice time.

The Jets’ futility on the powerplay continued as they were 0-for-2 with the man advantage. The Jets have now failed to score on their last 15 opportunities on the powerplay.

The injuries continued to pile up as both Mathieu Perreault and Joel Armia left the game. The Jets were already without injured players Bryan Little, Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford and Mark Stuart. Chris Thorburn did not dress either because of family reasons. Both Dano and Andrew Copp made their season debut after recent call ups from the Manitoba Moose.

The stretch of three games in four nights for the Jets continues on Friday when they take on the Detroit Red Wings.
