WINNIPEG — Despite missing the playoffs, four members of the Manitoba Bisons football team were still chosen as conference all-stars.

Defensive end Evan Foster earned his third consecutive all-star selection while linebacker DJ Lalama, offensive lineman Geoff Gray and kick returner Shai Ross were all named conference all-stars for the first time.

Foster, 25, is the first Bisons defensive player to get three straight all-star selections since Pete Adams in 2011.

“Throughout the year, you kind of know if you’re having a good year or not statistically and stuff like that,” Foster said. “So I kinda knew I was probably going to get another one, and it feels good. Obviously we didn’t end the season the way we wanted to, but this feels nice.”

Lalama, 23, was named a conference all-star after leading Canada West with 72.5 total tackles but the selection would have been a whole lot more meaningful if the team had more success.

“I guess it’s great that the coaches have respect for you throughout the conference but the football itself is the ultimate team sport,” said Lalama. “The Vanier Cup, we were close in 2014 and after that exhibition game against UBC, we really thought we got off to a strong start and we had a chance to do that again.”

The Herd also had four all-stars last season, down from the eight all-star selections they had in 2014.
