Startling smoke alarm survey results

West Kelowna fire officials have discovered that six out of 10 residences recently visited did not have a working smoke alarm.

The results were released in conjunction with this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign.

Officials said they visited two mobile home parks and discovered that more than half didn’t have working smoke alarms.

“The results of this initiative showed that 63% of the homes visited did not have a smoke alarm present, or had alarms that were either not working or expired,” said Kelly Wilson of West Kelowna Fire Rescue.

“Each year, three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms,” he said.

Those residents who didn’t have a working smoke alarm were given one for free.
