Police in Pembroke, Ont. say a lost dog walked three kilometres in search of food and water before he wandered on to police property to “turn himself in.”

Ontario Provincial Police said the dog, a Springer Spaniel named Brody, strayed onto the Pembroke detachment’s property and was promptly taken into custody Tuesday.

“He had travelled, we figure, about three kilometres from where he had been staying at a dogsitter’s place.

“In 19 years that’s the fist time I’ve ever had a lost dog turn himself in.”

Peever said police were able to locate Brody’s owners’ contact information on his collar, but discovered they were away and that he had been left with a dog sitter east of the city.

He added that the dog was reunited with the relieved dogsitter that afternoon.

“He was released from custody,” said Peever, adding the dog’s owners were made aware of his misadventure.

“We were able to reach friends of theirs and they were going to get in touch with them.”
