Vernon Search and Rescue said it has already responded to more calls this year, than they did in all of 2015. They had 56 call outs last year, and on Monday night they had their 61st call.
“People are out there enjoying the weather and they’re partaking in activities, but not exercising the proper caution.” Vernon SAR search manager Pete Wise said.
Wise said this was the second rescue in the Okanagan on Monday night.
“We had just touched down in the helicopter from one call and then went running to this one.”
A man was dirt biking in the Bison Lake area when he fell, his bike landing on top of him pinning him down, according to Wise.
Someone found him about 20 kilometres down the Kettle River on the trail.
He activated his spot beacon which sent his location to the police, and finally to SAR.
Wise said the team was able to get to the man and place him in the care of paramedics, who took him to Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The man’s condition is not known.
He adds that people need to be more prepared for going out into the bush.
“Tell someone where you are going because a lot of times we don’t know where you are.”
