IIU investigates after collarbone broken during arrest in Portage la Prairie

The provincial police watchdog is investigating after an arrest ended with a broken collar bone on Tuesday.

According to a news release from the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), an RCMP officer noticed a vehicle driving erratically and tried to pull the car over. The vehicle turned off the road and into a ditch. The three people in the car all attempted to flee.

The RCMP constable pursued one of the suspects on foot. The chase ended with both the officer and the man on the ground. The suspect was handcuffed and put in the back of the cruiser where he complained he wasn’t feeling well.

The suspect was brought to the hospital where it was discovered his right collarbone was broken.

The IIU is a civilian organization that investigates serious incidents involving police.
