Michelle Obama sat down with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show on Tuesday, where she gave insight on presidential photo shoots, spoke about first family dinner conversations and revealed a brilliant impression of her husband, Barack Obama.

When Colbert asked the first lady about her romantic photo shoot with her husband for Essence magazine, Michelle revealed that the actual moment being captured on film was less affectionate than it looks.

“Barack is horrible in photo shoots, and I hate doing photo shoots with him, so I’m sure right there I was saying, ‘Would you just be patient? Don’t rush the photographer,'” Michelle said, laughing. “I was trying to convince him to just chill out and relax. So [the photographer] caught that discussion.”

The pair didn’t talk too much about the current presidential race but Colbert did ask Michelle if she had any “sympathy” for political spouses who have to “stand by” their partners while they run for president, even if they don’t agree with some of their political stances.

“No, not really,” she replied. “You have to be in it. And if you don’t agree, you should have [said so] before they ran. Bottom line is, if I didn’t agree with what Barack was saying, I would not support his run. So I stand there proudly and I hope they are too. So no sympathy!”

Colbert mentioned that he felt a little sympathy for Melania Trump, after she was embroiled in a plagiarism scandal at the Republican National Convention, where portions of her speech were lifted from a speech Michelle had delivered years before.

“Yeah, that was tough,” Michelle dryly responded.

During her interview, she did an impression of the president talking to the family around the dinner table.

Michelle revealed that her oldest daughter Malia often asks her dad about important issues he’s tackled at work. She followed by imitating her husband’s typical response.

“Well, I’m glad you asked that,” she said in a pretty spot-on Barack voice. “Let me just answer that in three points: 1, then 1A and then 1A and B.” Michelle said she and her youngest daughter don’t share the same enthusiasm as Malia. “Sasha and I are like, urghhh … Because Sasha and I want to talk about our favourite song on the Lemonade album. That’s what we want to talk about.”

The last time Michelle Obama appeared on a late-night talk show, she sat in the passenger seat next to James Corden for an installment of Carpool Karaoke, where she rapped along with Missy Elliott.
