Edmonton launches survey to get feedback on its vehicle-for-hire bylaw

Six months after its vehicle-for-hire bylaw came into effect, the City of Edmonton is asking citizens to weigh in on how ride-sharing companies are regulated and whether or not their vehicles should have markings on them that identify them as private transportation vehicles.

In June, several city councillors expressed concern ride-sharing companies were picking up street hails, something not allowed under the current bylaw rules.

The City of Edmonton launched a new online survey Friday to gain insight from citizens about what they think of the current bylaw and how they use taxi and ride-sharing services. The survey closes Sept. 29 at 11:59 p.m.

The questions will also be distributed to the Insight Community, a forum through which Edmontonians can share their thoughts with the city. Anyone 15 years of age and older who lives or owns property in Edmonton can become a member.

Survey results as well as input from the industry, will be shared in a report to the city’s Executive Committee on Oct. 18.
