A man is dead and charges are pending against a teen following a fatal crash on Circle Drive in Saskatoon.

The crash happened in the southbound lane of Circle Drive between Attridge Drive and 108th Street on Wednesday at around 1:25 p.m. CT.

Police said their initial investigation shows that a northbound vehicle lost control, crossed the median and struck a southbound vehicle.

Members of the Saskatoon Fire Department arrived to find two passenger vehicles, each occupied by a lone driver. Rescue crews had to use a hydraulic cutter and other tools to extricate one driver.

A 70-year-old man was pronounced dead at the crash scene. His name has not been released.

The other driver, 17, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The teen has since been released from hospital and he is in custody. Police said charges are pending for dangerous driving causing death, two counts of breach of probation and two counts of breach of undertaking.

Northbound and southbound lanes were closed for several hours as debris from the collision was spread over both sides of Circle Drive.

Collision analysts were on scene investigating and collecting evidence. Officers have since reopened all lanes of traffic.

Fire crews remained on scene to clean up leaking fuel from both vehicles.
