AHS announces limited audits, criticizes FOIP requests

A decision by Alberta Health Services’ board is coming under fire.

On Thursday, the new chair Stephen Lockwood announced a limited audit would be done regarding expense reports in the Calgary region.

However, it will only be done on officials who have volunteered, and will only look at expenses incurred between 2005 and 2008.

Lockwood also criticized the media for making continual Freedom of Information requests, saying those along with the internal audits have cost the health system $200,000.

“The health dollars we have today to spend on the health of Albertans are not going to be spent on chasing something that might be out there,” Lockwood declared.

Critics say that Albertans have a right to know if public dollars were wrongly spent.

“Those are tax dollars that are being used and we want to make sure that these tax dollars that are being used to their utmost efficiency,” said David Ohreen, an ethics professor at Mount Royal University.

In November, Alberta Health Services will begin posting all expense reports on its website.
