Rod Ruark has unexpectedly resigned from his position as reeve and councillor for Vulcan County Council after nearly 18 years.
He suggested the council has grown extremely dysfunctional over the last two-and-a-half years during his Wednesday resignation.
“If I couldn’t move things forward in a positive way, I felt it was better for me to step away and perhaps this might work towards resolution,” Ruark said.
“Maybe I was part of the problem…I’d be the first to admit that if I’m part of the conflict, I shouldn’t be part of the solution either, so stepping back and stepping away, I’m hoping that maybe the remainder of council can start working together as a team.”
Deputy Reeve Roy Lucas will carry out the reeve responsibilities until at least Aug. 17. Council will then decide whether to hold a byelection or leave the council as is (with only six members) until the next municipal election.
