WINNIPEG — Darkness crept over southern Manitoba following Wednesday nights storm and lightning show.

The aftermath resulted in power lines down across the city; 48,000 people without power at the peak across the province, according to Manitoba Hydro; trees on power lines; trees on cars; and even roofs ripped right off their buildings.

“We heard about the big storm through our neighbours who called us while we were at the store. They said our big pine tree fell in your backyard and so when we got home this is what we saw. We saw that there were downed power lines,” said Lucille Champagne-Kwiatkowski.

People living inside described hearing a big banging sound and then seeing water pour in to neighbours apartments.

“I was in one of the rooms and all of a sudden I heard a big bang. My next door neighbour in 410 came knocking on the door and she had water coming in,” said Len Bakalinsky.

Manitoba Hydro said anyone capable of working did work, and said the storm damage spanned right across southern Manitoba.
