LETHBRIDGE – The sun is finally shining and that has people looking for the perfect place to cool off. What better place than the brand new Henderson outdoor pool?

The City of Lethbridge said opening weekend was busy at the pool, but also a bit hit-and-miss because of the extreme weather watches and warnings.

Monday’s weather held off for the day and the pool saw just over 1,700 people come through the doors.

Recreation Services manager Jason Freund said the facility has a capacity of 1,250 people and, more than once on Monday, they almost hit it.

He said residents have been lining up early and come prepared for a long day at the pool.

“People are excited for the amenities, the water slides, the spray park – there’s just nothing like that,” Freund said.

“The zero-depth entry is available for everybody. I’ve gotten a couple of touching emails from people that have been able to bring kids with accessibility [issues] to the pool who were never able to go before.”

The pool is anticipating more days where attendance gets closer to capacity and is looking forward to the challenge.

“We expect we will be near capacity nearly every single day,” Freund said.

“We ask people to show up early. There are no in-and-out privileges at the pool… Once we do hit that capacity, we’re basically waiting for people to leave before anyone else can come in.”
