Vancouver weather to stay wet and cool through July

Metro Vancouver will have to wait a little longer to get some real summer weather.

Vancouver has seen a  total of 22 mm of rain so far this month with seven out of the first 11 days of the month being wet. The amount of rain has already surpassed the monthly totals for July 2014 and 2015.

Temperatures have also been cooler than normal, averaging at 20 C, a little below the normal for the month at 22 C.

According to Global BC’s Chief Meteorologist Mark Madryga, the spring-like weather will continue for the foreseeable future.

“While there will be a few warm sunny days in the mix over the next 10 days, the charts mostly maintain a low pressure trough over that time through B.C., keeping conditions changeable and showery on occasion,” said Madryga.

It’s a weather pattern that is actually quite normal for the region, but the last three years have seen a much warmer and drier start to the summer.

July 2015 started off with exceptionally warm weather, averaging at 24.7 C the first 10 days of the month with no trace of rain.

Even though residents and vacationers may be frustrated with this summer’s lack of heat, it’s a blessing for forests and reservoirs, Madryga adds.

A map comparing the forest fire danger rating from this year to 2015 shows just what a difference the wetter weather has made for B.C.’s wildfire season.

Here’s hoping summer arrives before the end of the month.
