Calgary police arrested two people after a crash in the 5200 block of Macleod Trail South. The accident followed a police chase that lasted nearly two hours.

A male driver and woman were taken into custody early Tuesday morning after a stolen SUV hit a building, a tree and then stopped at a barrier.

Police started tracking the SUV shortly after midnight in the city’s northeast. Global News has learned the vehicle was stolen from Leduc, which is located just south of Edmonton.

Officers were called to the 52 Street and 26 Avenue N.E. area for reports a man was assaulting a woman in a parking lot.

“Upon police arrival, the man and woman got into a white Jeep Cherokee, which had previously been reported stolen, and drove northbound in the southbound lanes of 52 Avenue, nearly hitting the marked police vehicles that were responding to the incident,” police said in a statement.

HAWCS monitored the jeep as it sped along several busy routes—including Metis Trial, Country Hills Boulevard, Crowchild Trail and Macleod Trail. Police said it was seen driving in the wrong direction at times, and reaching speeds between 140 and 180 kilometres an hour, as well as running red lights.

The vehicle eventually crashed on Macleod Trail South.

“He drove throughout the city, throughout many major arteries and throughout residential areas at high rates of speed, forcing many people off the road,” Duty Insp. Dean LaGrange said. “At some point at about 2 o’clock this morning, the suspect lost control after blowing several tires and drove into the side of the building on Macleod Trail.”

Police said the driver pulled into a casino parking lot and tried to hijack a second vehicle just before 2 a.m. He failed, got back in the Jeep and drove south on Macleod Trail at about 140km/h on rims after the tires had blown, police said.

Firefighters had to cut the woman from the vehicle. She was then rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition.

A number of charges are pending against the driver, who fled the scene but was apprehended suffering minor injuries in the vicinity of the 5000 block of Macleod Trail S.

Police said the investigation continues, and it’s not yet known if charges will be laid against the woman.
