WATCH: Vancouver police were called to East 11th Avenue Tuesday evening to respond to a fire at the rear of a three storey house. Grace Ke reports – Jun 22, 2016

It was a close call early this morning for some residents in East Vancouver.

A raging fire threatened to spread from a three-storey house to nearby homes. At one point crews had to return to the home because the fire began smoldering after they thought it had already been extinguished.

Originally, it took eight trucks to douse the fire and prevent it from spreading. When crews arrived, the house in the 1500-block of East 11 was already fully engulfed in flames.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Neighbours say the homeowner comes and goes frequently and the house is occupied by numerous tenants.

“It was really frightening, like [the flames] were going up to the trees there,” said neighbour Robert Mulvin. “I was more concerned about the neighbour next door because they were standing out there. It looked like the house there could quickly catch because their house is very close to it.”

There is significant damage to the home but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
