Tent Caterpillars move into popular Saskatchewan Park next to Manitoba border

It’s a take over next door. Or at least it looks like it.

Tent caterpillars are making their mark in Saskatchewan’s Fish Creek, Moose Mountain Provincial Park. Just a 40 minute drive from Manitoba’s border and a popular spot for many Manitobans to head over to. It looks like the caterpillars are swarming not only trees and campgrounds, but blanketing buildings and even the door to the women’s washroom at Fish Creek.

‎Melissa Lebersback posted the photo of the caterpillars covering the women’s washroom at the campsite Sunday. Putting a plea out to the park to do something.

Saskatchewan Parks said park staff have done everything they can and are aware of the problem.

She said in parks that are heavily impacted, staff will do an egg mass survey and spray with environmentally appropriate products. But, even then she said it’ll just put a dent in the massive population of tent caterpillars.

Staff do brush frequently and pressure wash and 30 minutes later the tent caterpillars are back. She says luckily they’ll cocoon soon and turn in to moths. Calling it a short term pain that shouldn’t get in the way of camping too much.
