As he met a group of comrades preparing to mark the anniversary of the Normandy invasion, Ivor Anderson, a sapper in the 591 Para Squadron Royal Engineers, joked, “Where’s your tie? Come on, get your bloody tie on.”
“I know. I was told not to wear a tie and then you’re all wearing ties. I’m under-dressed,” replied Prince Harry, who was wearing shirt and suit but no tie.
The meeting was at Southwick House, near Portsmouth, Hampshire, where the D-Day landings were planned.
There were 45 veterans present ahead of the annual pilgrimage to France and Prince Harry spent time chatting to many of them.
The prince also visited the Map Room – where the Supreme Allied Commander, General Dwight D Eisenhower planned the military action that changed the course of the Second World War with naval Commander-in-Chief Admiral Ramsay and Army Commander-in-Chief General Montgomery.
The room features a large wall-sized map of the English Channel, which was installed in the house in April 1944.
