A Go Fund Me campaign has been launched to support Steve Gates, the street performer pictured sitting on a Halifax street with Halifax Regional Police officer Const. Shawn Currie.

That photo, snapped by Bruno Baurin, went viral and spawned several memes.

The man in the photo was identified as Steve Gates by his brother, Ian Gates, who launched the fund raising campaign aimed at raising money for Steve’s violin upkeep.

Ian, who lives in Alberta, says his family was “touched by the candid photo of officer Currie and Steve.”

The outpouring of affection and concern for Steve’s well-being on social media prompted Ian to start the campaign.

Ian says Steve is a classical violinist, and supports himself playing his violin on Spring Garden Road.

“His violin is important to him,” said Ian.

“If he didn’t have [his violin], he’d have nothing; he would have no purpose in his life.”

Ian hoped to raise $3,000 to set up an account at a local business that would allow his brother to have his violin repaired or replaced, if he chooses.

He established the campaign on May 29, but didn’t publicize it until a few days later. His $3,000 goal was exceeded within 48 hours.

Ian says any money raised above and beyond the $3,000 will be used to for Steve’s ongoing health and well-being.

Ian says other offers have been pouring in as well — three people have offered to donate violins to Steve, and he’s been offered free haircuts and beard trimming and new shoes and socks by local businesses.
