A tearful Paul Findlay finished last in the women’s triathlon at the London Games on Saturday. The Edmonton athlete was hampered by a poor swim and a lingering hip injury.
As she crossed the finish line she kept repeating the same two words: “I’m sorry.”
Later, she told reporters she had nothing in her legs. She tweeted “Sadder than I’ve ever been. Thanks for the love. Life goes on.”
Kathy Tremblay of Pincourt, Que., crashed during the cycling portion of the race and did not finish.
The Olympic triathlon consists of a 1,500-metre swim followed by a 40 km bike segment and a 10 km run.
The race was won by Nicola Spirig of Switzerland who crossed the line at the same time as Sweden’s Lisa Norden. But Spirig was declared the winner in a photo finish.
