One year after he was stabbed to death in Whistler, the family of Luka Gordic has released an emotional new video calling for changes to the Canadian justice system.
“It feels like yesterday that I received a phone call that would change my life forever. I was told my baby brother was surrounded, jumped and stabbed by a group of teenagers,” Gordic’s sister says in the video.
Four people have been charged in his death, including two who face second-degree murder charges.
Three were charged as minors and Gordic’s family has been calling for them to be charged as adults.
“In many cases youth offenders received minimal punishments and are not properly integrated into society,” said Gordic’s sister in the video. “Therefore, they are not afraid to re-offend and commit more serious crimes such as murder. Our purpose is to generate community awareness on how weak the criminal justice system is and by signing our petition we will continue to fight for tougher laws for Luka and other victims and families who have endured similar situations.”
More than 26,000 people have signed a petition that asks the suspects be charged as adults.
