One week after she was forced to flee her home, a Fort McMurray woman has given birth to a healthy baby boy.
Sarah Smith gave birth to Ryker John Llyam Mackay at the Lac La Biche Healthcare Centre at 10:10 Tuesday morning. Little Ryker weighed in at six pounds 12 ounces.
“I went through 18 hours of labour with nothing but laughing gas,” Smith told Global News.
“I’m great, just obviously exhausted and sore. I’m so happy he’s finally here.”

Smith, who has spent the past week at the Lac La Biche evacuation centre, has learned her home in Fort McMurray burned to the ground in the wildfire. A family in Lac La Biche has opened up their home to Smith, her boyfriend and their new baby until they are able to make long-term arrangements.
Smith said she will likely be released from hospital Wednesday. And when it comes to being a new mom, she just had this to say:
“It’s surreal. I don’t think it has hit me yet.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Fort McMurray wildfire measure 229,000 hectares in size. On Monday, Wood Buffalo Fire Chief Darby Allen said about 85 per cent of Fort McMurray remained intact.
