UPDATE: Police said on Monday they had located the missing magazine and ammunition.
Calgary police are searching for a missing magazine from a service pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition that disappeared Thursday evening.
A District 8 officer was on duty when he noticed one of the magazine carriers on his belt was open, and the loaded magazine had fallen out.
Police said the items went missing between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., and are likely somewhere in the communities of Midnapore, Shawnessy or Silverado.
Officers have searched those areas, but to no avail.
While Calgary police use a type of ammunition that is commonly available to gun owners, they said the lost ammunition without a firearm poses minimal risk to the public.
Service magazines are prohibited because they hold five more rounds than other gun owners are allowed to have in a magazine.
The magazine only fits one make of handgun, and poses no risk on its own, police said.
They said finding the lost items are important to ensure they are secure and are never used in the commission of a crime.
The Calgary Police Service apologized for the loss, noting firearm safety and security are top priorities.
They said releasing information about this incident is being done in the interests of transparency and maintaining the trust of Calgarians.
Police added trust is something they do not take lightly.
Anyone who has information about the lost magazine or ammunition is asked to call police at 403-266-1234, or to contact Crime Stoppers.
Calgary police issued a correction that it is a prohibited magazine, not a restricted magazine as was initially stated.
