Cancer society makes plea for donations in light of ruined daffodils

Heide Pearson/Global News

In light of the fact that more than 30,000 bouquets of daffodils were ruined before reaching Nova Scotia, the Canadian Cancer Society is reminding people that donations are still essential to their operations.

Every April a Daffodil Month fundraiser is held by the Atlantic division of the society which raises money for research and programs for cancer fighters, survivors and their families.

This year Nova Scotia’s daffodils were exposed to heat while the shipment was in transit. Over 33,000 bouquets were ruined.

The fundraiser normally raises a minimum of $300,000, with more than 50 per cent coming from pre-ordered sales.

Following the devastating news society’s national vice-president, Barbara Stead-Coyle made a plea to anyone normally interested in helping the campaign to donate the money online or consider purchasing a daffodil pin sold throughout the province.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

With two days to go in the campaign only $60,000 of the normal $300,000 has been raised.

Stead-Coyle says “The support of our donors has been heartening.”

The public, provincial politicians, Dalhousie University, Delta Halifax, banks and Loblaw stores are trying to raise funds to maintain the normal contributions.

Anyone wanting to contribute is asked to go to the Canadian Cancer website or purchase daffodil pins at Sobeys, Scotiabank, Central, CIBC, Coastal Inn and Starbucks’ locations.
