CÔTE SAINT-LUC – Some much-needed money is coming at just the right time for caregivers in Côte Saint-Luc.
The City of Côte Saint-Luc will receive $390,913 in funding over three years from the New Horizons for Seniors Program to provide program support for senior caregivers.
The money will go to build a drop-in centre at the Côte Saint-Luc Aquatic and Community Centre.
“It’s so important here in Côte Saint-Luc. We have an aging population. We have people in their 80s and 90s taking care of their spouses, and children and grandchildren taking care of a grandparent,” Mount-Royal MP Anthony Housefather told Global News Friday.
The nearby CLSC used to run a full-time program, but as part of the healthcare reform it was slated to close. As a compromise, it’s currently been running part time.
With the grant money the new caregiver centre will run five days a week with staff from the Cummings Centre.
A fee of $8 for the day will be charged, but most of the cost of the respite centre will be covered by the grant.
Renovations will be done to adapt the centre for the elderly clients before the program will officially start receiving residents.
