SASKATOON – Elysa Campbell finished her second year law exams just in time for the hottest day of 2016 thus far. With the sun beating down, and temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius, she and her four-year-old daughter Ryseron took to the sandy banks of the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon.
“Finally, we get some sun. Well, we’ve had a few nice days, but I think today’s our nicest. It’s really nice to get shorts on,” Campbell said.

Other families cooled down by grabbing an ice cream at Bus Stop Refreshments across the street from the Delta Bessborough.
“It’s our warmest morning so far and I think it’s just going to get better from here,” said owner Laurel Beaumont.
On the same day one year earlier, it was about ten degrees colder. In 2013, there was approximately 25 centimetres of snow on the ground on April 18.
However, a hot, sunny day comes at a price.
Saskatoon’s 11th grass fire of 2016 broke out along Circle Drive Monday afternoon. With relative humidity hanging around 10 per cent, a fire ban also continues in the RM of Corman Park.

Kindersley and Rosetown were even drier with only 7 per cent humidity.
An extreme fire hazard was also in effect for the Paynton area, where a grass fire crossed both lanes of Highway 16, creating zero visibility. The roadway has since reopened.
The heat is expected to continue into the middle of the week, with temperatures near 20 Celsius.
