Firefighters resorted to a lasso to rescue a three-year-old boy who fell into a pump well in Weifang city in China’s Shandong Province on March 31.

According to the Associated Press Television News (APTN), the well measured 90-metres deep and 30 centimetres wide – too narrow for an adult to rappel down.

To find the boy, local firefighters used a life detector – equipment that is usually used to locate people buried under rubble – and found the boy stuck 11.8 metres underground.

The boy’s family was present during the rescue, trying to comfort him as rescuers prepared rope to pull him up out of the well.

They lowered a rope into the well hoping to lasso the boy but found it difficult to get it to tighten around the boy.

The boy was told to wrap his hands around the rope but only had one free hand.

Several attempts later, they successfully lassoed the boy and pulled him out of the well.

According to APTN, it took rescuers over two hours to rescue the boy, who was uninjured from the incident.
