SUMMERLAND – The decision has come down, Trout Creek Elementary School in Summerland is among those slated to close in School District 67; however, some parents, local politicians and members of the community are still doing what they can to try and overturn the school board’s decision.

The District of Summerland and a group of parents have collectively taken their fight to the Office of the Ombudsperson, which investigates whether provincial public authorities have acted fairly.

“I don’t understand why they are choosing to close one of the most efficiently run schools in the district and mess with the schools in Summerland,” said Angela Scholefield, a Summerland parent.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Scholefield said she is among those who will be urging trustees to reconsider the facts presented and to put a motion forward at the next board meeting to rescind the decision to close the school.

Another parent, Tina Martin, said she’d like to see the provincial government step up with more funding for public education.

“We know that our government, the Liberal government, does not make public education a priority and hasn’t for a long time. So the trustees are left with a budget that is not adequately funding our children,” said Martin.

Summerland Mayor Peter Waterman also criticized the B.C. Liberals.

“I’m extremely disappointed in the fact that the government say they’re focusing on families and children, and economic growth and here they’ve put Summerland in a difficult position to achieve the goals that the provincial government say they have.”

Waterman said having educational opportunities available for all children in the community is a crucial part of the development of a vibrant community that is attractive to families.

“While this decision will affect the community, it will not define us. Summerland is experiencing an active housing market and significant private development projects,” said Waterman in the statement.

“The closure of Trout Creek Elementary School will require us to adjust our future planning; however, council is optimistic that Summerland remains well positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.”
