Final three ‘American Idol’ contestants revealed

LOS ANGELES – Three contestants are left to vie for the last American Idol crown.

Trent Harmon, of Amory, Mississippi, Dalton Rapattoni of Dallas, Texas, and La’Porsha Renae of McComb, Mississippi, were announced Thursday as the contenders.

MacKenzie Bourg of Lafayette, Louisiana, was eliminated from Fox TV’s singing contest after receiving the lowest number of viewer votes among the final four.

American Idol is ending its run next week after 15 seasons.

The two-part finale, airing Wednesday and Thursday, will feature performances by past winners including Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

American Idol faded over the past few years and was eclipsed by new music competition shows. Personnel changes didn’t help, and neither did tinkering with the format, as the show fell victim to what usually kills off most television series – old age. Still, it was a solid performer for a network that struggles in the ratings.

Idol was a quick hit, with fans following contestants who sought the prized “yellow ticket” to Hollywood and a chance at stardom. In the early years, American Idol also showed many of the cringe-worthy auditions of contestants with no hope of winning, but has generally resisted those recently.
