EDMONTON — The City of Edmonton is coming in about $27.3 million under budget for 2015.

Much of the savings came from lower than budgeted personnel and fuel costs, according to a report that will be presented to council next week.

Mayor Don Iveson said the savings come as good news to the city.

“A lot of that came from managing vacancies. However, I understand that the discounts that come from that have been factored in, in large part, to the 2016-2018 operating budget. So administration has already harvested some of those as ongoing savings,” Iveson said Thursday

“I appreciate that administration, under council’s supervision, has really tightened up all spending that’s possible.”

Snow and ice control did not contribute to the 2015 surplus. The city’s snow removal budget for the year was about $61 million and the city spent $64.8 million. The costs were mostly eaten up by snow storms in the first quarter of 2015.
