Iraqi troops continued their advance on Islamic State group positions in the capital of Anbar province, Ramadi, according to a local commander.

AP footage showed Iraqi soldiers combing the district of Husaiba, near Ramadi’s city centre, on Saturday, and clashing with pockets of IS resistance.

The city was recaptured from militants at the end of last month.

The Islamic State group controlled parts of Ramadi since early 2014, but it only succeeded in overrunning the city entirely last May.

The extremist group has suffered major losses since the height of its territorial control in 2014, but still holds significant areas of the north and west of country, mainly Mosul, as well as parts of neighbouring Syria.
