REGINA – Saskatchewan police say a holiday season blitz last month led to 308 impaired driving-related charges across the province.

In December, there were 308 offences for alcohol and drug use. This includes 300 Criminal Code charges for drivers with a high Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) exceeding 0.08, refusing a breath test, or impaired driving.

There were eight drivers who were stopped with a BAC between .04 and 0.8.

Police also handed out 3,124 tickets for speeding/aggressive driving, 229 tickets for failing to wear a seatbelt and 145 tickets for distracted driving.
Ninety-five distracted driving tickets were given to people who were using their cellphones.

This year will mark the third year for tougher impaired driving laws. Introduced in 2014, the penalties include longer licence suspensions, immediate vehicle impoundments, and mandatory ignition interlock for impaired drivers who are convicted.
