WINNIPEG — If you’ve been waiting patiently to lace up your skates and head to the outdoor skating trails, you could be in luck this week.

According to The Forks, the Red River Mutual Trail is just about ready to open.

The warm temperatures we’ve experienced this season put a halt to the process, but the recent deep freeze put that schedule back on track.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Chelsea Thompson with The Forks told CJOB News they hope to have an announcement later this week for the first section of the trail to open.

“We’re heading out onto the Red to start with. It’s basically just the section that leads from The Forks to the Norwood Bridge. It’s going to start with a skating rink and about a kilometre of trail.”

As for how far crews can extend the trail this season, Thompson knows it all depends on the weather but she is optimistic.

“It looks really favourable to get further down the Red for the next section, as well as even hopefully getting on the Assiniboine this year. Look for the first week of February to have the next phase announced.”
