Hiking, long afternoon naps and too many treats are just a few things likely on Arik the RCMP dog’s agenda as he retires from the service after six years.

Arik will be heading to Cape Breton where he will be taken in by a new family and enjoy a new, relaxing lifestyle.

Arik’s handler, Cpl. Al Hamilton says it’s going to be a bittersweet transition.

“He never had a bad day. As soon as we arrived to any scene, day or night, he was always ready to give 100 per cent,” Hamilton said.

Arik has been a loyal partner for Hamilton, responding to 176 calls in the Bible Hill area this year alone.

“The only thing he really dislikes is getting out of bed in the middle of the night, so now he will be able to sleep all he wants!” Hamilton said.

A member of Arik’s new family in Cape Breton is also an RCMP member, so Campbell will be able to stay in touch.
