A Brandon police officer is recovering after he was stabbed five times Monday evening.

The 31-year old officer was attempting to arrest a 19 year old man near Brandon University when the suspect took out a folding knife.

Police say the officer was stabbed four times in the leg and once in the side of the chest. Despite the injuries, the police officer managed to control the suspect before other officers arrived.

The injured officer, who has been with the Brandon Police Service for six years, was taken to hospital. He was released and is recovering at home with family.

The 19-year old is a suspect in a fire in an apartment suite on Rosser Avenue.

He has been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer as well as arson with disregard human life.
