Crews hope last cellphone ping will help find missing Shearwater sailor

SHEARWATER, N.S. – The area where a missing sailor’s cellphone is believed to have last pinged from is where search crews explored Saturday.

“Could have been a case of the cellphone dying, battery dying, and it’s still with him, but we certainly want to cover that off to make sure we close that door, so to speak,” said Rob Weatherby, a regional master warrant officer for the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.

Leading Seaman Benoit Bilodeau, 48, was last seen walking near a bus stop in front of 12 Wing Shearwater on Saturday, November 21.

Search crews combed through a forest near the base in rainy conditions.

“There’s a lot of swamp in there, a lot of bogs, it’s rough going so, yeah, they’ve got some challenges, but they’re plowing through it,” said Tony Rodgers, a spokesperson for Halifax Regional Search & Rescue.

Teams from Colchester, East Hants, West Hants, and Musquodoboit were called in to help Saturday, he added.

About 80 searchers have helped out over the past two days.

“We want to be positive and, right now, what we’re looking for is any kind of clues we can get as to his whereabouts,” said Weatherby.

Anyone with information that could help with the search is asked to call the Military Police Unit at: 902-722-4446.
