Snowfall leads to a slippery drive in Montreal

MONTREAL – Tuesday morning’s commute was a test of driver patience.

As snow blanketed the island of Montreal, the red lines highlighting incoming traffic on commuter maps looked more like a traffic stop.

“Usually there’s a lot of slipping and sliding, but [Tuesday] morning’s congestion started a lot earlier than usual,” said traffic reporter Debbi Marsellos.
“[There were] a number of accidents in key spots like the Metropolitan and Decarie.”

Transports Quebec said plows were out early Tuesday morning.

But the snow isn’t bad news for everyone.

At Merson Automotive in NDG, the phone was ringing off the hook with people looking for winter tires.

“It wasn’t even the weather forecast,” manager Celso Lauro told Global News.

“I was waking up in the morning and my car was covered in snow. I was like ‘OK, I gotta get out of the house.'”

The wait time was about an hour to get a fresh set of winter tires and Tuesday morning’s rush is starting to make up for the lack of business in the last few weeks.

“We had such a mild November, so business was down across the industry,” he said.

“I’m expecting the next three weeks to be rather hectic.”

So, as temperatures drop outside, how can drivers keep their cool?

Take it from the traffic expert – “turn up the tunes and enjoying the ride,” said Marsellos.
