Police in Belgium sent out a request to the public Sunday for “radio silence on social media” as they conducted a series of 19 raids in and around the nation’s capital, Brussels, and three others around the countryside.
The request was issued on Twitter and when translated it read, “For safety, please observe about ongoing police operations #Bruxelles . Thank you”
The country’s Minister of Defence, Steven Vandeput, also issued a similar plea on Twitter.
The raids capped a tense day with hundreds of troops patrolling and authorities hunting for one or more suspected militants, the Belgian government chose Sunday to keep the capital on the highest state of alert into the start of the workweek to prevent a Paris-style attack.
